I'm troubled by this statement from Obama:
"[Insert extremely broad, generic presidential statement about the economy.]"In effect, what Obama is saying is: [insert Ridiculous Proposition, completely unrelated to above statement by Obama].
Let me explain why this is so ridiculous: [insert brutal, utterly devastating takedown of Ridiculous Proposition].
Of course, this completely vindicates me, because I said a long time ago that [insert warning about Ridiculous Proposition from the 2008 primaries or early 2009].

Brilliant!!
I guess I'm glad that Prof. Krugman is using his bully pulpit to say a few obvious things because Pres. Obama sure isn't using his. What kind of President mentions education 14x in his state of the union address, research 9 times, innovation 10 times and jobs 26 TIMES and promptly delivers up a budget that will gut all that spending??
2 months ago he delivered up $900 Bn of tax cuts, primarily to the already wealthy and now the budget is going to get balanced on the backs of the poor. This isn't government this is bad Kabuki theater.
Dear Economics of Contempt, first of all, thanks for your blog. I really appreciate the insights you share with us and have a high regard for your posts. I also feel the same way about Paul Krugman's comments. He does seem to communicate insights and often quite technical points in a way that is easy for a lay audience to understand. Perhaps Paul Krugman is biased, but I don't think he intentionally misleads.
Anyway, perhaps it is right that you caution/remind your readers that Paul Krugman is not an impartial commentator. On the other hand, perhaps you should be fair and give us a specific example of where you think Professor Krugman has attacked a straw man argument, rather than caricature his writing style in this fashion.
PK was GREAT bashing "Chauncey" Bush, but has been TERRIBLY bad at using his "pulpit" for admonishing the FED (Both AG & BB). Someone would do well to remind him, he remained silent during the Boskin Hearings, silent during the Glass-Steagall Repeal Hearings & didn't call the housing bubble until mid 2006 - AFTER it popped.
Exceedingly amusing—especially because it's so true.

Perhaps Krugman's [Completely Ridiculous Proposition] is at times ascribed a bit tightly to one figure or another, but somehow I keep hearing these ridiculous ideas promoted as serious thought.
For instance, we could apply this template to a column on the stimulus. It would say take a statement of political practicality as Obama's quote, take it to mean that Obama is saying Keynes was all wrong, and continue with the template exactly. Sure, maybe Obama didn't mean that, but it doesn't change the fact that that same [Completely Ridiculous Proposition keeps] coming up in debate, and needs to be crushed.
Just looked at Krugman's last 14 posts.
Not one matches this "template".
But, hey, if all you you want to do is score points, I guess facts don't matter
I suppose I'm pleased that will Prof. Krugman is employing his / her intimidate pulpit to express a couple of obvious issues since Curr. President obama sure isn't utilizing his / her. What type of Leader says training 14x in the express from the union deal with, analysis In search of times, development Ten times along with work opportunities 26 Occasions as well as rapidly offers upward a low cost which will stomach all that investing??
